I had an old Ford Sierra 2.3 diesel that did well over 55MPG, also a Cavalier 1.8 diesel and that did over 50mpg.

It wouldn't have been a 1.8 cavalier diesel, the early one's were 1.6d and then 1.7d and eventually, the best of the bunch, an Isuzu sourced 1.7td. In my opinion, one of the best diesel engines ever produced.

These older diesels did good mpg but were too smokey, hence the emissions and hence all the gubbins we now pay for

That's right it was a 1.6D, it never let me down despite having nearly 300,000 on the clock.

The Sierra was a right monster, given half the chance it would've pulled a house down.

Them Meastro diesels were a noisy engine. I had a Nissan Bluebird diesel for 6 months until someone decided to arse end me.
