With a cambelt mate I always like to go 5000 below, oil changes I like to go 2000 below.

I think they're on variable servicing. Same as my vito. I change the oil every 12500 and a full service every 25000 irrespective of what it tells me. Cambelt is every 140000 I think but I would change it at 100000.

As long as it's serviced by a VAT registered garage on schedule and decent parts fitted your fine.

They have to be decent parts mate, if you go to TPS they're owned by VW and have parts for Skoda, VW, Seat and Audi they'll do you parts deals much cheaper than any Auto Factors.

My calliper went on my Passat a few months ago, it's a motorised one due to it not having a handbrake just a button you press. I expected something in the region of £100 for the calliper, TPS came back to me with a price of £55 for a genuine VW part. While I was on the phone I ordered a full service kit off them, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter and a gallon of VW spec oil, total price £97.00.

Don't scrimp on parts because they'll only find fault with them if it has to have any warranty work done.

If I hand the car to a garage I have no control over what parts/oil are fitted though

VW will find fault with them if it needs warranty work and there have been Auto Factor parts fitted. Like I mentioned above, TPS can beat any Auto-factor quote.
