What's everyone's thoughts on the new electric taxi then at £55600 !

I'm a Hackney driver in Nottingham currently driving TX4 2008 model.

I don't think I will be upgrading to the electric taxi at that cost.

How much does a new diesel TX4 cost ?
How much do you spend on fuel a week ?
How long would you keep a new TX before selling it ?

It may be £55k to buy, but factor in fuel saving of £100 a week - how long before the saving equals the extra cost of the electric version ? After 5 years youve spent £25k less on diesel !

My hybrid cost £4k more than the equivalent TDci Mondeo, after 2 years I'm now at the point where the extra cost has been wiped out by the fuel cost. From now on I'll save £2k a year on fuel compared to the Mondeo.

If I was to keep it for 10 years (quite probable);
Auris Hybrid £21,000 purchase + 10 years petrol@£2kp/y = £40,000 overall.
Tdci Mondeo £17,000 purchase + 10 years diesel@£4kp/y = £57,000 overall.

Obviously the more you spend on fuel the bigger the saving.

I see your point but I don't think the insurance will be cheap on these. Will be interesting to see what kind of quotes drivers will be getting

Think Nottingham are bringing in a zero emission zone as well, you'll have no choice to get this or an equivalent I'm afraid

Yeah they are bringing in clean zones in 2020. However they have allowed us to drive a EURO 6 cab until 2030 so I think a lot of drivers will take this option and buy a used one in 2020 for about £20-25k rather than go on the mortgage rate of Electric Taxi. Will have to see what kind of issues the drivers get who do invest and go for the new TX

As we have discussed before, if it's anywhere near as good as promised, it will save the average driver at least £20,000 over 5 years. That's still cheaper than the existing tx4 and £7,000 cheaper than a Vito.

Let's see how the first few drivers get on and what gremlins may crop up in first few months. I agree with what you say but a 1.3 engine and the battery.... 4-5 people and lugggage off to airports long runs let's see how it copes

Nice for flat London.

Here it's all hills with very few flat bits.

I think the uphill's will take more power than the downhill's will generate.

I bet all the testing is done with an ex Racehorse Jockey driving, with no passengers or luggage. The tyres are probably slightly over inflated and the test track is probably slightly downhill.

Am I overly pessimistic?

Until someone gets one and uses it in your area to compare to a traditional motor we won't know.

I do know that if you do lots of motorway driving then a modern diesel is better than a hybrid, and that hybrids don't like uphill strtetches - it really kills the mpg. But as I don't live in an area with lots of steep hills I couldn't say if it was any worse/better or equal to say a diesel mondeo in hilly areas as I have nothing to compare it to.

But aren't they Hybrids, so that £20,000 isn't going to be achieved?

Let's say a London cabbie is sitting at London city airport. And a customer runs out of the terminal and says Glasgow airport please driver. Will that driver have to say sorry mate get in the diesel one behind. Or will he have to phone his wife and say I'll be back in 2 days. Or can it make the 800 mile round trip? Not read up about the new cab yet so was just wondering. Sorry If that's a stupid question like I said not read into it yet

I have based that figure on an average saving of £80 p/week. I usually spend £120 p/week in diesel averaging 32mpg. I think £40 p/week on petrol and electricity is possible with the TX.
