salvation needed, 15 years driving a manual and I am completely over this changing gear malarkey,I know manuals are definitely the safer option when it comes to reliability but are there any decent autos out there that are not made of chocolate and don’t self destruct on a weekly basis?

Skoda Octavia or Superb DSG auto boxes are bullet proof. Service them every 30,000 miles and they'll run forever.

Cheers nidge2 forever sounds good but if I could get 200k out ove one ide be well happy, the regular oil changes Seem to be the key then, I was always worried they would not be up to the rigours ove 200k taxi miles as the majority ove my work is town stuff so the box would be put through its paces every shift.

It handles town work like a trojan, just keep on top of the 30K gearbox services and it will run forever. My jobs are mainly town work and the DSG is a godsend.

It makes me piss when people moan about auto boxes and them breaking down. I ask them "if they've ever serviced the gearbox?" I get a "no you don't have to service them." You can't fix stupid.

I can get the oil changed for £80 but the pan filter kit alone is £120 from merc (inc oil)

the petrol skoda DSG is a dry box
