Unless you are reasonably mechanically minded you are also trusting the service to spot any defects or potential defects on the vehicle, some of which are safety orientated.
If I were in that situation I'd rather trust my car and my life to someone charging a reasonable price for a reasonable job,not someone whos so cheap that they are obviously cutting every corner in sight.
If you end up tying your taxi round a lamp post one night because the brakes failed or similar you'll be dead chuffed you saved a few quid to repair it with and the NHS might be able to put you back together too.

Get a tyre fitted and they will tell you your pads/discs are shot, you need new wipers and they can do all the work NOW!

Apart from the fact that prices for service work vary from area to area, I have a little rule of thumb.

If they have a Receptionist, check that they have done the work requested and expect the bill to be double anyone elses!

My Way ~ Find a garage you trust, pay their bill within a couple of weeks of the work being done and don't forget the Christmas Box of Choccies.

I knew a back street 'car repairer' who cleaned rusty brake pipes with a angle grinder and would use a syringe and undereseal to put a 'welded' seam round imaginary repairs to sound sills and floor pans.
I did hear that another party piece was to use a grease gun to pump in a mixture of filler and hardener into worn king pins to take up the slack.

If they're really good, a bottle of the hard stuff is a better bet.

gusmac: If you give a bottle, the Boss usually gets it. If you give Roses, or whatever, everyone gets a few.
