At the back of the top of the engine (close to hot pipes - could be linked to the manifold) he said that there are some (his description) butterfly wings! He tied these open, apparently letting in more air. It works a bloody treat with the cab flying like nearly new.
Does anyone recognise from my description as to what was actually done
I'd say some sort of temperature control valve. They stay shut whilst the engine warms up and once at operating temperature open. Did your problem only happen once the engine had got hot ?
There used to be a system on older cars where there was a lever near the air intake which you moved between winter and summer settings.
The cab is an 06 with around 170,000 miles on the clock. The limp mode would kick in whenever the engine was put under any strain i.e hills, gradients or body weight of passengers - it did not seem to matter whether the engine was hot or cold. My own observations of the cab point me to how hard the revs are working - no matter what gear was selected......if I hung onto the revs for to long - limp mode kicked in. Fortunately it is now working properly - but I do not know why as such.
