As these are now part of your MOT/inspection and if yours is torn or holed, your ball joints won't last long, replacements are now available.

I thought this was a failure a long while back "Cover torn or damaged allowing the ingress of dirt" on any car.

So just had my MOT (97 Fairway), and aside from a load of welding (which I knew was coming and had a handy welding place sort for me) my only other real failure was the split / damaged ball joint covers.

I've had a quick look around tonight but only complete ball joint kits seem to be for sale.

There are 'universal' covers for sale. Are these any good? Fit ok?

Yeah should be ok. Just measure the size of your old ones and you should get a set that matches.
