I used to jack up the rear of my old FX4SPlus under the diff. It was OK because the case and the axle was all one piece. On the later Fairways, they used a GKN Axle made up of the case and separate axle tubes that were fixed together. Would probably still be OK but as Blackpool says, I use the car's jack in the jacking points and then put it on axle stands. It goes without saying; NEVER work under a car with just a jack. (We all know that anyway)

support on wooden blocks rather than bricks as bricks give way without warning whereas wood will crack and emit a noise...
