Does anyone recognise from my description as to what was actually done

I'd say some sort of temperature control valve. They stay shut whilst the engine warms up and once at operating temperature open. Did your problem only happen once the engine had got hot ?

There used to be a system on older cars where there was a lever near the air intake which you moved between winter and summer settings.

The cab is an 06 with around 170,000 miles on the clock. The limp mode would kick in whenever the engine was put under any strain i.e hills, gradients or body weight of passengers - it did not seem to matter whether the engine was hot or cold. My own observations of the cab point me to how hard the revs are working - no matter what gear was selected......if I hung onto the revs for to long - limp mode kicked in. Fortunately it is now working properly - but I do not know why as such.

I'd be knocking the Main Stealers door down and demanding your money back. This old boy sorted your motor without the need for a computer.

I'll hazard another guess that the valve opens when under high load to let more air into the engine, sounds like it may be for the turbo perhaps ? It seems odd that tying the valve open cures the under load problem but doesn't cause an issue when not under load.

Id guess the old boy has taken the variable vane operating link off the actuator and wedged it at the halfway point

it would throw up a P123B fault (P132A is the actual actuator at fault, B is sticking vanes)

this the actuator on a Mk3 TDci

and this is a modded manifold awaiting the next clean out...20 minutes and £4

and this is the bit that gets clogged up due to fine machine tolerances behind the vanes
