Supplies now seem to be available here, but thanks to all for your input.

You'd be supprised at the amount of discount you could get if you bought 4+ at a time.

I always thought here was something special about tyres marked 'taxi'.Is it just because they are made with an exact circumference?.

It's like Primark, they buy items from the same manufacturer that make the same gear for D&G, Ralph Lauren and all the other top shops. They'll make it with the same cotton and with the same workforce. Same shirts different tags.

It's like the Taxi Tyres they are van tyres with TAXI stamped on the side.

Pull up at the side of a van and compare the tyres.

The reason they have Taxi marked on the side is to show the Licensing Authority that they are the correct size to be used on a taxi which works in conjunction with the calibration of the meter....

Don't they test the meters for accuracy?

Let me pose a scenario.

You go to get your meter checked for accuracy - with your "Taxi" tyres fitted. Your meter is run over a measured mile/kilometer/furlong/light-year (*delete as required) and it passes as accurate.

Now you go an fit your other wheels, they are 1 inch less in diameter - you get more drops over the same distance. Even "ordinary" tyres of the same size might be smaller and so again you take more in fares.

The word "Taxi" is a way that Enforcement Officers can see easily that all is well.

The downside of course that "breadvans" like mine, or whining Skodas like Captain Cabs don't have this easy check - so, should we have more random checks?

Possibly.

Strikes me as being a draconian piece of pointlessness.
It only affects purpose builts like the TX.

Breadvans as you call them or saloons for that matter are "trusted" not to defraud the public but if you have a purpose built cab, you are not :?

BTW, does the diameter of a tyre not change as it wears out?

Yes it does, if you have more worn but legal tyres on the wheels that provide the "pulse" you will make (very slightly) more money.

As to the rest - it started in London where the PCO insisted (and I don't think they still do) on "Taxi" tyres. There of course it was previously only purpose builts - it may be that the requirement was only dropped when the Vito with easy parking capability (or turning circle) was allowed. I really don't know.

Out here in the sticks, some LA's who based their vehicle conditions on those of the PCO, are now still insisting. A bit silly when when there is a larger choice for most of us, even if we do have to have a WAV. Even less point when saloons are also allowed.

There has never been bale of hay ever mentioned in any act for taxis in England and Wales.

So if you have a bale Mr T - you can get rid of it whenever you want.

I think you'll find both of them... will come under local by-laws

I know I can be boring..... but searching through each and every city and MB'S by-laws over the last 150 years does not appeal to me
