| Post subject: | TX1 Glow plug relay |
I know its one of the three under the bonnet near the brake servo, does anyone know which one it is? Saving me time tracing it  . Also does anyone know what voltage reading you should get from a glow plug when the ignition is switched on? We are getting the reading 4volts which seem low to me?

If you are taking a reading from the top of the glow plug with the other lead of the voltmeter connected to earth four volts might be about all that there will be on the gauge. |

If TX1 is auto there are three relays on the o/s inner wing nr the servo. The smaller of the three is for the auto gearbox the other 2 that are identical both are for the glow plugs. After switching around the plugs to them both the engine fires up instantly (when cold) and theres been no other problem surface since the switch of plugs. Maybe it was down to a bad connection? I am going to revert back to test that out which will then confirm if I need a new relay. |

I don't know if the TX! is identical to the fairway set up but on the fairway there are two relays.One heats the plugs up quickly from cold,cuts out and then the other one heats them for a bit longer but through a resistor so they run at reduced current.The first one cuts in for a few seconds,the second for up to about half a minute. You should be able to hear the relays click in ,first one,then the other from under the bonnet with the ignition on.(If you touch them you can sometimes feel them cut in). If you put a volmeter on the connection to the plugs and the other end to earth,you should see a reading for say ten seconds and then it should drop for another twenty or so before ceasing altogether.If you try a second time after only a short wait the first relay will cut out earlier than before. My fairway has now decided it doesn't want to start in this sub zero weather.It fires up OK but then stops,the glow plugs don't seem to be on full heat for long enough.i'm wondering about swapping the relay plugs over as a temporary cure. As it is,just a whiff of the dreaded 'east start' and its away no matter how cold it is,and it fires up straight away as soon as the thermometer goes much above feezing. Any thoughts ?. |

Sounds like glowplug 2 is faulty. Glowplug 2 stays on for about 60 secs after starting at a reduced voltage. Glowplug 1 is only on for few seconds to start the engine. |

I think both sets of relays are orking OK but would prefer the glow plugs to stay on full heat for a few seconds longer to see if it helps it to fire up a bit easier. |
