hello new to forum and would like some advise on buying a fairway cab for private use.. my budget is a max of £1500 (would prefer £1000) looking at an ex london fairway H reg with euro 3 emitions kit fitted comes with full mot e.c.t he want £1500 for it.. what do you all think?? i would prefer a driver with disk brakes e.c.t but cant find one in my price range that is ex london.. any ideas? also wondering if there is a buyers guide around for common checks to make when viewing? loads and loads more questions but that will have to do for now.. grate forum thanks james p.s im 5ft8 will i have enough room to stretch my legs? |

thanks for replys, thinking of using one for private use i.e as usual car.. my volvo 850 has died and on the look out for somthing reliable and easyly fixable with cheap parts (cab seemed to fit the bill!) what do you think? any buyers guides e.c.t? thanks james |

I use a fairway as daily transport. Some parts are quite expensive and some are pretty unique,be prepared to shop round.Rusty bodywork is a problem,and body parts aren't cheap.Water running in from leaky windscreens and back windows are other problems that seem common. The disc brake versions are a better bet than the drum braked ones if you want to use as regular transport. The work I've done on mine is shown here http://www.baconsdozen.co.uk/londontaxi.html I'd recommend one as a run about or workhorse and they are fun to drive,but full time cabbies with them must have well padded backsides,ear plugs and the patience of a saint to drive one for eight hours a day. Having said that I'd be very reluctant to part with mine. |

who do you insure through? thanks james There is normaly a selection on EBAY, or taxi mart you could even try the Birmingham taxi warehouse Insurance i belive would be cheap as chips for private use and I think I am correct that they are only group 1 |

Insurance was via Tesco,other firms will insure them.Most list them on their computers under Carbodies not LTI or Fairway. I bought mine via ebay,I don't know of any for sale round here. As far as I know (perhaps some of the more learned on here will advise) LTI crush all the cabs that are traded in so there aren't that many ols ones on the market. They seem to have gone up in value lately,when I bought this one there were plenty about under a grand.There are various firms advertising them for sale but around the two or three thousand mark,might be worth it as you get a guarantee etc,but for a cheaper one its possible that ebays still the best place. |
