Post subject:  Screw-in Upper Ball Joint

The genuine LTi screw-in upper ball joint (part num. 604435) for my TXII is £30 (inc. vat). I've tried countless suppliers for a 'pattern' ball joint, but although similar in most respects, none have the same length thread that screws into the wishbone (16mm)!

Can anyone help? Someone out there must know who makes these ball joints for LTi!

Why don't you just pay the £30, You will waste more than that looking for a cheaper one.

Hey Grandad (!!!!),

You are right... 'Tis time wasting putting more than a moment's effort into finding a 'copy'; possibly!!!!

LTi/M&O want £77.51 (all in) for a complete set of wishbone bushes - which don't last very long on the UK's beautiful roads! These are old Jag. parts and are on e-bay for £25 (the entire set - delivered) - for the EXACT same product!!!!!

My Bottom ball joints cost me £10 and a few pennies (inc. vat) from Prospect AutoSpares along the road from me. (£43.30 LTi/M&O). And track-rod ends £6.99! (£25.69 LTi/M&O).

As you can see, way cheaper than LTi/M&O (who don't MAKE these products they buy them in and sell them at silly money)! And I've used both genuine(!) and pattern for long enough on my TXII to know the pattern parts (which probably come from the same factory) are equally as good.

Someone out there knows who makes these - TVA stamped - ball joints for LTi/M&O...

Thanks for the link to londontaxiparts, Wannabeeahack. They are going to measure their part for thread length and let me know. They have also informed me that for just £5 more (£13.50 inc. vat) they can supply the genuine part!!!

Their track-rod ends are even cheaper than my previous supplier - just £4 each when you buy a pair!!!

(I shall up-date as I find out more...)

Hi Darth,

I checked the length and it is 15mm whereas the others are 16mm.

I can assure you that both have passed without any problems but as mentioned we have either.

in another life i was a HGV storeman in parts

my boss always wanted me to chop prices, one day looking at a trailing arm bolt for a german air suspension and seeing it cost US £35 plus vat (we sold it out at £56 plus vat), and theres 6 on a 3 axle trailer, i noted all the markings, measured it up, took it, and the bush it fitted in to a local supplier, he had the exact same bolt on the shelf, in the same aircraft quality steel for £15 plus vat

however my firm kept selling the newer cheaper item at the old RRP, i didnt even get a thank you............

Post subject:  LATEST UPDATE

Now back off holiday, I've had time to check things properly...

[NOTE: IN CONVERSATION WITH LONDONTAXIPARTS IT CAME TO LIGHT THAT THE MEASUREMENTS LISTED ABOVE BY THEM DO NOT REFER TO THE LARGE THREAD! THIS ERROR WAS DUE TO NO-ONE, EXCEPT FOR THE INFORMATION I REQUESTED GETTING MIS-INTERPRETED.]

I have received parts from LondonTaxiParts including 2 different screw-in ball joints for my TXII. On their site - once on the ball joint page for TXII - there is a drop-down-menu listing either: Regular Product or Branded Product (+£9.50) {previously I stated that this was £5 more; prices have changed}.

The 'Regular' is an unbranded ball joint @ £8.50 inc. vat. The 'Branded' one is Frap @ £19 inc. vat.

My findings so far... I have decided to go with the 'regular' ball joint as when measured against the TVA stamped LTi ball joint, the thread is virtually identical in it's length/amount and positioning! (The 'branded' one is not!)

This, initially, is good news for us the end user as it is considerably cheaper than the over-priced product from LTi/M&O.

When I have tested the joint in use, and put the taxi through it's council test next Month (May) I shall report back on my findings.

No. Possibly I didn't explain myself clearly on the phone to someone, who in turn had to explain it to someone else on the warehouse floor etc. etc. etc. before they got back to this posting with the measurements above!

The important part is that I can vouch with certainty that the 'regular' product they sell fits the wishbone as well as the LTi part does!

As an aside, Captain Cab... Could I politely point out that your signature is grammatically incorrect!

It reads: Serving the Nations Hackney Carriage Trade.

It should read: Serving the Nation's Hackney Carriage Trade. You left out the apostrophe.

Regards.
