Ha Ha - I copied that picture earlier and emailed it to a Swedish friend to say 'where can I find these?'. I am keen to crack on. Still, thanks for helping and I may pursue that option. I don't suppose anybody can explain why such an antique system is used, if there is a more modern connector and does it matter which hole the cables go in? Why doesn't one just get the 3 or 4 cables and join them all together ?!?!? My that really does sound like a dumb question.

I bought some strange blue connectors from Biltema

http://www.biltema.se/sv/Bil---MC/Bil-t ... -st-44035/

They might do the same thing but they seem very fiddly.

It doesn't matter which wire goes where, they all join together in the connector.

Yes, these scotchlok connectors will do the same job.

You could join the wires anyway you like, but bearing in mind how rattly a black cab can get, you need something that won't come apart easily. Remember the joints have to withstand the climate as well.

Well, you know what? We are nearly done. I was tinkering pretty unsuccessfully with these stupid connectors when the nice guy across the way came over to see how my life was going in Sweden - he has an MG and had seen the taxi come out of the garage and go nowhere fast. 20 minutes later after confirming that I could really use any electrical connector, supplying me with some decent wire strippers and replacing all the indicator connectors, he was reaping his reward of fixing it all by getting to drive Eleuthera around the block. All I needed at that stage was one bulb - lo and behold, one appeared in a plastic bucket in my garage. I think we have a 100% working vehicle.

It has only been 3 years.

So. £200 to get her 'in traffic' and then £600 a year tax. Then the MOT of course.......think I might be buying that Volvo still !

I am sure there is more to come.......

Rubbishy electrical connections have been a pain in older British cars for years.I had all rorts of Jags and 70's rovers with useless electrical systems.
The ride of a fairway taxi verges on the bone jarring at the best of times and gives the electrics a hard time anyway, add a few dodgy connectors to the mix and problems are virtually a certainty.

I realise that this thread has been inactive for a few years but I thought if worth posting here instead of opening a new thread with the same title.
My '96 Fairway auto gear shift started acting up last week, similar to @rrobbo situation I found myself stuck in auto 1. Can force 2 manually and after that seem to be able to force 3 in auto again.
I have taken her to my usual mechanic that chucked a litre of fluid in (gearbox is leaking slightly from underneath somewhere), no help.
I have now taken her to a auto gearbox specialist who is quoting €2000 "more or less" to recondition the whole box.

My question to the group is seeing as I am reluctant to recondition of the box would cost almost as much as the cab itself. Is there anything I can try?
I read that @rrobbo solved his problem by topping up the fluid, could it be just that simple? could a complete fluid flush be worth a try? or do I accept the professionals opinion and consider putting the old girl to sleep in favour of a TX?

Any prompt advice would be greatly appreciated as I have to give the go ahead or move my cab soon.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Skippy thanks for your reply.
Your not the first to tell me that an oil and filter change could be worth a shot.
Would have hoped that the guy taking a look at her for me would have already done that before advising a complete rebuild of the box.
I'm taking her elsewhere today at least to get a second opinion.
Thanks again.
By the way don't know if you already know about this forum:
http://fairwayowners.freeforums.net/
looks to have a lot more active users than here.

Finally got the gearbox reconditioned =D>
However this has not solved the problem #-o
The gearbox specialist tells me that he has opened her up 3 times already and the box itself looks fine
Must be something else :?: :?: :?:

Going through the workshop manual with him we came across pages AT-19 which describes a Vehicle speed sensor and a kickdown control unit.
Page AT-20 talks about a A/T control unit located under the steering wheel.

He thinks these may need replacing, I'm trying to source them from the UK, but no luck till now. Anyone here have any experience with these parts? could they be causing all this trouble??
The manual isn't very clear at this point, could the kickdown control unit & A/T control unit be one and the same thing??

We're running out of ideas here :? :? :?
