The car is an E7. Over the last couple of months I have noticed occasionally the car loses its zip on acceleration.............like you put your foot down to go but it is a bit flatish but not overall anything to worry about. Out last night on a motorway and the car did not feel right, and I realised that the power was drifting away whilst I was going up a slight incline. Putting my foot down further did nothing so I had to drop a gear to get the speed back up. From time to time during the shift it remained flat but the turbo would occasionally kick in and so I kept going. Towards the end of my shift I was parked up for about 10 mins or so and turned the engine off. I started the car after this time and everything started working normally, the zip was back so happy days......................apart from what I have said what is the problem with the turbo or could it be dirty fuel. One other thing I was talking to a guy who seemed to know what he was talking about and he mentioned it could be " MAF air flow" which is apparently to do with the turbo sucking in air etc.........any ideas pleeeeeeeeese. |

I am led to believe that the turbo only kicks in at 2000 RPM, so if you are in too high a gear with the revs lower, then that may be the cause, although I doubt it from what you have described. |

Unplug the wire from the top of the MAS give the connections a clean and replace it, then check the hoses around the air box make sure they are all secure, also check the hoses behind the engine |

Is your turbo getting enough oil and are all the hoses connected and cinched down properly? Skippy might be right too, though. Could be a Mass Air Flow sensor problem. |

Cheers guys, there are one or two videos on the net that show you how to clean air flow sensor. After checking the hoses that will probably be the thing to try. |

Check your air filter isn't choked and the lid is back on the box properly. |

Could something be throwing the engine into some kind of limp mode? This is often cured merely by stopping the car and restarting it, but the underlying fault could well recur. |

Something that did occur to me is that the "Mass/Maf air flow" system is reliant on a heat sensor! As stated I stopped later in the shift for 10 mins+ with engine turned off, then off I went again and everything was working okay.............so was xxx part getting too warm/overheated. Unless someone else/yourself can throw any further light on to it, then I think it is best that I try all that has been suggested i.e hoses/filter/cleaning etc. |

Work methodically, you nned to check all hoses for splits, it could be the MAF but that generally throws a dash light on, so if you wanna check that out ask a kind friend to swap with you cos they ain't cheap, check the air filter for dirt and replace the fuel filter, this should be done every 40k regardless of what Pug says, 20k is even better, if this lot isn't doing it I suspect you are in line for a turbo failure before long. |

it could be our old friend - the EGR valve/inlet manifold getting gunged up....giving a flat spot, 2000 rpm is typical for ford engines, including mine, to die a little |

I had a Mondeo that did that, and it wasn't the turbo, or the ERG, it was the bloody accelerator pedal. It appears their is a sensor in the pedal that goes wrong. How on earth would anyone without a supa dupa computer know that?

It happened again last night................just went flat on me after doing about 25 mins of motorway driving. All the way back 28 miles ish the engine was very flat, I was up and down the box particularly on an up gradient. I got back to Cardiff and stopped at some traffic lights! I wanted to see whether it was because of over heating or as to whether just turning the engine off and then restarting some seconds later would make any difference. I turned the engine off for about 5 seconds and then restarted it, I had no further trouble for the rest of the shift....................Sooo anyone know what's up. |

It will have a diagnostic port somewhere why not ask a friendly garage if they can plug it into there comp it will show the fault code then you will know exactly what to check. If the MAS is on the way out it will do it continually, it could be something simple like a relay overheating |
