I recently bought a '97 "P" reg Fairway Driver, ex London. It's in pretty decent nick on the face of it. There are 1 or 2 little problems I want to get sorted out though.

When I bought the car I went and put £20 of fuel in. The gauge showed 3/4 full but after a few miles driving it I noticed that the gauge dropped quickly and now won't show anything at all. I did drive about 45 miles home so it didn't drop out onto the road.

I think it might be the sender unit, but where exactly in the boot is this? I don't have a manual (can't seem to find the Fairway Driver one anywhere). I might just get the TX manual as the TX1 used the same Nissan engine. Dunno if the wiring diagrams will be similar though.

A mate followed me back when I bought it and he said it was blowing a bit of black smoke on occasions, mainly going up hills though he said it wasn't excessive. This does concern me a little. Due to bad weather recently not had a chance to give it a good run out. Am I worrying about nothing?

I wouldn't worry too much about the black smoke as long as it isn't excessive.Sometimes giving it a good hard run will clear it for a while.
The tank sounds like a problem with the sender, doubtless someone on here will tell you where it is.

Take ramps and stuff out of the boot and look for a circular piece of metal on boot floor,as for black smoke wouldnt worry to much

i wouldn't bother changing the sender unit as youl probably end up having to change the tank, brackets etc.
leave well alone and just make sure you run a full tank, its not worth the bother

There's a lot of sense in that,if you find the tank or the straps are rused and damage something it wont be cheap to put right.
If you fill it up then keep an eye on the speedo you should be able to judge when to fill up again.

exactly! and even if your lucky and you replace it without damaging anything else the new one will break in a few months.
not worth the bother imo

Fill it up every 250 miles save you messing with the sender unit.

Because of the way the sender is mounted, when you first fill up, the gauge will hardly move but after about 130 miles, it will drop like a stone. Regarding the fairway manuals, I occasionally put them up on eBay. They are NOT available for free anywhere as far as I know. That link is for the driver's owners handbook, not the workshop manual. I'm on holiday at the mo but will put some on there when I get back. £15 inc P&P is far cheaper than most places...
