Post subject:  Gear change in fairway taxi
After a hard run the gearbox in my fairway decided it din't want to change out of 1st automatically when pullingf away.It would cahnge manually.This happened half a dozen times but now is behaving itself again.
Does anyone have any ideas?.
As a side issue anyone thinking of selling one of these might do well to look at how the prices have climbed over the past few months.They might even be a good investment.

Change the gearbox oil you'll be surprised at the difference it makes, your gear changes will be spot on.

I changed the fluid (the old stuff was black although the dipstick oil looked clean).The plug was as tight as hell I guess it had never been undone.
The box is much improved,and it even seems to pull away better.

Did you change the filter inside the base of box at the same time????if not you will have to do another oil change soon
You can get one and it comes with a new seal

My Fairway I recently bought is into Mann & Overton this week for a full service. (Yeah I know... you guys will say I'm being robbed. But I just want them to do the full works on it just this once so if there's anything wrong I can get it sorted out. I won't be going there regularly.)

They told me they would do everything except possibly change the gearbox oil. They said they had some problems in the past with the new oil causing the pressure in the gearbox to increase which in turn blew out a rubber seal in a bad place. Bark of a job to replace the seal apparently. So they said they don't like to do the oil change any more. Any of you guys heard of this before?

When I took my car into the main dealer last week for full service I mentioned this filter to them. They said they never changed them as it was not a recommendation from the manufacturer. I found this a bit strange. Why do an oil change then penny pinch on the filter?

Skip doesnt run a fairway.....so I guess if its running better with just the gearbox oil change the dealer is probably correct?

CC I was watching wheeler dealers when they where doing a merc and it had similar gear change problems
ED weny through the whole gear box oil and filter change in the box and he said all automatics have them and some garages are just to lazy to change the filters and that what causes problems

You always know when you gear oil is getting ready for a change. Decent gear box oil smells of berries which tells you it's still OK. When it smells burnt and sooty that's when it's ready for changing. Some drivers don't even change their gearbox oil in a Auto. You've got experience the problems then you'll know what to do.

Apparently Wynns make a machine for changing automatic geabox oil,its supposed to get all the oil out whereas doing it manually leaves some behind in the torque convertor.
