| Post subject: | Fairway Gear Problem |
I have a 1992 Fairway. On some occasions when trying to start the engine when the gear selector is in "P" the ignition just clicks. I have to put it into "N" to start it. Is this a common fault? |

at a guess id say there are a switches on the selector that defeat startin at other than N or P, you may have a loose switch and/or connection, they will be under the car somewhere |

It will be the inhibitor at fault you can either get a new one or just do away with it.Always prefered to get rid of it personally, the only difference is you can start it in any gear. |

Thanks guys. I'm assuming that it wont do any harm the way it is at the moment though? |

Mine does that sometimes,Often pushing the lever forward hard means it will start, probably a case of adjustment. Years ago a guy at Norwich car auctions was almost killed when someone started an automatic jaguar in gear because the inhibitor had been disconnected, the auto choke made it rev too high and it pinned him up against a wall. |
