The transformer on my E7 decided in the early hours of Sunday morning to pack in. I was having a sh!t shift and this just added to it, luckily I belong to the A.A and got towed home.

Just to get a picture of what it might cost ( a yardstick so to speak) I rang "Halfords" on Sunday although I had no intention of purchasing from them, the cost being for a part exchange £237, tbh not sure whether that included vat (I think the shock knocked the thought out of my mind).

Anyway the next day the best that I could find locally was £177 + vat. I got to talking with friends and mechanics and the topic came up re reconditioned units OR repaired whichever way you see it. So I am now thinking that if a part broke on your engine then you would not necessarily change a whole engine, on that basis I went for a repair and managed to get mine repaired for £49.94p, it was basically the brushes and they mentioned something else which went straight over my head but I cannot imagine that there was much wrong for just under £50. This came with a 6 month warranty..........Did I do right OR should I have gone for a new unit?

I always go for them who can repair them with new bearings and bushes.

You'll find out that all the Motor Factors take their units that are exchanged by the customers to these firms to be re fitted with bushes and bearings and given a nice coat of paint then put back on the shelf for premium prices.

We've got a firm round here called Synstart who do starter and alternator repairs, he makes a nice little earner from the Taxi Trade and he looks after the drivers to.

I think the part you cannot remember is the voltage regulator.
On most modern alternator units , you can get a repair kit for them, and even fix it yourself if you can get at it

Thanks guys for reading through and translating my post! As I was writing the word "Transformer" it did not seem to look right...............Derrr, because it wasn't. You are all, right, "Alternator" was the word.

Bushes, about £5 a pair (2 pair per alternator) and about 30 minutes to fit plus removal/refitting unit

Overall cost.............Alternator repair £42.50
V.A.T 7.44
Garage strip & refit £52.50
V.A.T 9.19

Total £111.63

A lot cheaper than the £208.00 incl VAT for a new one + Fitting cost which would have come to £269.69 :D

a BRAND new will obviously cost more than a recon, which in turn will cost more than a DIY repair, besides bushes there are bearings to replace, the zener diode pack would need checking and you cant say what wear had been placed on the rotor/armature

the main thing is your mobile again and have a reciept for your accounts
