Hello all.

This is my first post, so I'll try and cover everything. Looking at some similar posts, it looks like you guys are pretty helpfull, so here goes.

I have a problem with the ignition of my 2002 TX2. On many occasions, it just wont fire up, ignition lights, radio etc work on the first and second turn of the key, but when your turn the key further, nothing. After a couple of attempts, and sometimes weirdly if I swap keys, it works. Sometimes however, the starter motor will turn over but the engine will not fire up. Annoying, but it was liveable with.

Anyway, yesterday (yes Saturday night! grrr) I tried to start the car and I had the same problem, but no matter what I did, the car would not even try to start. Battery has lots of life, ignition lights working, radio etc. All normal except no ignition.

I have tried to work out what the problem is from other posts on here. The start relay clicks when I turn the key, so I'm guessing that power is getting to it. I have swapped the relay and this has not solved it. I spoke to an auto locksmith who said that the transponder in the key should be ok and it is unheard of that both would stop working at the same time. I have tried to start it in drive and the only difference is that the starter relay doesn't click, so it's not a fault there.

I'm guessing I need to get a man to run a diagnostic on it, but I have 2 school runs in the morning and I was hoping that if this problem rings a bell with anyone and there is a simple/bodge fix I can avoid letting people down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Leigh

Possibly the starter motor.

This is my first problem ever with a starter motor (if that is it) but do they just stop working? Would a diagnostic check tell me if it is the starter motor?

No, apparently there is a transponder which gets a little charge when the key is in the ignition.

I am a bit of a spoon to be honest, but would a diagnostic check via the socket above the brake pedal tell me where the problem is?

Yes, I did notice your use of the tehnical term 'spoon'.

But don't worry, we're all a bit like that on here. #-o

Although perhaps for the blokes the more appropriate term is 'spanner'. :)

It also relates better to cars and the like. :D
