I've had a fairway driver for about six months with no problem. Last week I changed the fan belt no problem.

Then three days later I started it up and it sounded like a bag of spanners, I drove for 100 metre and thought that the fan belt was lose or had come off. They fanbelt was ok and I turned round to go home knowing something was wrong. I stopped after 50 metres and parked up as the. Smoke coming out of the exhaust was considerable.

I went to work and came home , tried the engine again and the engine locked as it turned over.


I had a mechanic out to look at it, he mentioned there was no water in it (was ok for water last week). So suggested the head gasket could have gone. He took the plugs out but could see nothing... Said he was too busy to strip the engine......

Said it could be something or nothing!


I'm pretty handy with a manual by my side (if I can get one). But have no experience of diesels.

Are the any checks I can do to diagnose whether it is the head gasket or something more severe.

All comments greatly appreciated....

Really do not want to send it to scrap.

You could get it pressure tested ? Suppose the nearest specialist taxi garages to you would be liverpool. If it was head gasket did you not see temp guage going up ? Worse case scenario get a scrapper and stick the engine in,not a big job to do, good luck

The engine ran, normal till the morning of the noise, I'm a bit of a gauge watcher anyway, and didn't see it rise. I don't think they engine got warm enough to show

Got to be honest it doesnt sound to good, but if it was run with no water in it quite possible its seized.Any decent garage could check this out,pretty basic engine to work on

If the engine will not turnover by hand.... then more than likely it's dropped part of the head into the cylinder..... take the head off... and look... probably need a second-hand engine...

Location: Used to be in Lowestoft,now escaped.
It could have dropped a valve or seized through lack of water (maybe the rings have broken up).
With the cost of parts and the fact that there are so many fairways being broken it probably isn't worth repairing the original engine.If you drop a complete one in you'll have enough spare bits to keep yours running for a long time.
It might be worth asking some of the specialist taxi garages (ask a cabbie or I;m sure someone on here could put you right) they can probably change an engine in two or three hours.
