The old girl is making an alarming noise which makes me think she might be slowing trying to force early scrappage/retirement...

I know it isn't easy identifying a noise described in writing on a forum, but basically there is a sort of occasional clunking noise and I think a slight clunking feeling through the floor which seems to happen particularly when accelerating. It seems to run fine but doesn't particualrly sound or feel too healthy! I'm not sure whether it is worse when cornering, but possibly so.

Are there any obvious and common problems which this might be? Suspension joints/worn bushes, gearbox clunks etc etc? It is a 1997 model with 307k miles on the clock, now used as an occasional private second car. Any thoughts?

Cheers folks,

RW

If you can feel it through the floor I'd suggest it's the propshaft. Maybe a UJ is breaking up.

I wondered about the propshaft actually (honestly!).

What's a UJ?

Massive job presumably?!?

Rare for the engine , but possible might be prop or it could be gearbox clunking, both fixable things.Jack the back of cab up and feel for play in prop ,if not get gearbox serviced it might need the bands adjusting quite common. Also jack front of cab and and check the front wheels by putting one hand at 12 and one hand at 6 and checking for play could be a bearing or ball joint if creaking round corners..good luck sure itll be fine

UJ is universal joint. They are relativly cheap and easy to change.

If it is the propshaft its easy to check on a fairway, you can do it by pulling up the floorboards and sit down on the job.
Have you got any further with your investigating?.
