Hello everyone,

I've just purchased a low mileage 1 owner, FSH '96 Fairway that was taken in as a p/x, for private use , and I have a few questions to fire at you if I may :) I have read through all the topics and can't find the answers...

When turning the ignition to start it sometimes does nothing for about 5-10 seconds before bursting into life, is this a normal thing or something to be worried about?

The speedometer is not working (all other dash lights gauges work), the dealer seemed to think it was in some way connected to the LTI300 meter being disconnected? but I can't see how? I have taken the dash apart with ease but cannot get the speedo cable off? It has a yellow plastic connector to the back of the instrument cluster but I squeeze, turn, pull but it won't budge.... any ideas on what to look for once off and where it connects to at the other end?

The headlights do not turn on to main beam, they can flash high beam(blue light comes on) but do not go to high beam when lever is pushed forward (blue light does not come on). All fuses are Ok and bulbs appear fine?

Windscreen wipers work on intermittent and the first setting but not setting 2, I checked and cleaned as much as I could whilst I had everything apart and got setting 2 to work slightly but extremely slow and only for a few seconds, again all fuses are ok.

Now the odd question....... is there any reason at all why there would be any oil/leak in the front passenger footwell? The MOT which was in November had an advisory for an oil leak but this was a loose pipe/hose that was replaced so the only thing I can think of is that oil/fluid was spilt from inside? Any ideas as to what I should look for? It drives, brakes, changes gear fine and there is no oil/fluid under the cab... The underside has been wax oiled/undersealed from new and there is no rust anywhere on the floor pans.....

I have a few other questions along the lines of "what is this?" but I will accompany those with pictures.........

I am also in desperate need of a workshop manual for a reasonable price, I saw on another topic that someone here can do them for £15 but was a few months ago..... I also want to find a LTI300 meter....any suggestions? can't find any on Ebay at the moment......

Thank in advance for any help :)

The starting delay id guess being the ignition barrell on its way out.Should start straight away just changed mine with same thing happening. The speedo cable at the back of speedo head/dash comes of by pushing together and pulling of. The lights,do they dip when you pull stalk/indicator arm back ? If theres no power going to lights it could be the arm itself, try taking cowling of and looking at connection ? Maybe be better with auto electrician for that, could be one of many things. The wipers id think the motor is on its way out,are they sweeping the screen easily on the slower speed ? Lastly the oil in passenger side,i wouldnt have thought from cab there, more likely spillt in there.Does it get worse or has it returned once youve cleaned it ? All the best

Hi,

With the speedo cable, do you mean push into the back of the instrument cluster and pull to release or push the plastic on each side and then pull, I tried the latter and no joy... very frustrating....

With the lights they flash as normal when the arm is pulled towards me, side lights work as normal, it's just when you switch the lights on full they stay on like sidelights and pushing the arm away from me has no effect at all..... I cleaned everything I could see.....

Wipers work perfect... it's just when you push forward to position 2 is when they stop.

I've cleaned the oil ( gonna take the carpets etc out to thoroughly clean) so will see if that returns... just can't imagine where else it could have come from.....

Thanks for the response :)

Sorry on the plastic plug on back of Speedo you push together and should just pull off at the same time, might have to squeeze with pliers.Whilst off squirt a little oil down cable.
The lights are a tough one without being able to mess about myself ! Electrics are notoriously temperamental ! The relay for the dim dip is at the passenger side behind the glove box. It's the blue one ,the pink one is for heated rear screen. It could also be the light switch itself, quite common to go.
The wipers is another that is hard to tell, did you take motor cover off and regrease ?
Can't really imagine where oil will enter passenger side, would definitely think it's someone who spilled ,good luck bpool

The fault on the wipers could be the high speed brush. They wear down and can give a poor contact.

Silly question, but if the vehicle is for private use, why do you want a meter?

Hi everyone and thanks for the responses, the wiper problem is now fixed, I took the motor apart and it was full of sludge, cleaned it out and greased it and hey presto!! fully operational.

No joy with the headlights so far, removed the blue relay as suggested (had rear heated screen timeout on it?) cleaned contacts and replaced, also did the pink relay just in case but still joy... am gonna double check the bulbs and replace if necessary.

When I hopefully remove the speedo cable do I just squirt 3 in 1 oil down it? or does it have to be specific?

The pause in starting appears to have something to do with the battery charge, as I am not using the cab until the beginning of March (when my insurance on my Explorer renews). I hadn't started it for a while and had to jump start it but after letting it run for a bit, it starts on the button, its a new battery so fingers crossed once in daily use it will not be an issue.

As for the meter, because the cab is so original and with every bit of paperwork with it I just want to restore it back to how it was etc.... I'm planning to keep it for many years and its really just for novelty value... the cab still has all the Lion King decals on it also and the kids love it..... with that in mind, does anyone know what glue is used for the decals? I have a few peeling bits that I want to repair.

I've taken a few pictures of the unusual bits that need identifying and will upload those later.

Oh one more quick question, is it legal to put a white square plate back where the PCO number sign would go on the boot? I want some wording on there ("Ello Guv'nor" anyone who has kids will uderstand).

Thanks again for your responses.

Joseph

Hi JVekemans, what you encounter are the teething problems that every new Fairway owner encounters - more or less.
Concerning the electrics: you've probably got a disconnected wire to the high beam lever, or a loose/corroded contact. I don't think your relay is at fault since the high beam flasher works.
Don't confuse the two relays on the left:
The blue relay is the heated rear screen timer.
The pink relay is the dim/dip.
The oil spill in the bagage compartment is not a common feature: it's more often rain water that you encounter there, leaking from the engine bay.
Or maybe at one time the fan belt broke, causing the brake vacuum pump (at the back of the alternator) to stop working, in turn causing a safety device to release oil at the bottom of the engine. This is a one time occurence.
Cherish and enjoy your Fairway for many years!

Provided that the plate does not give the impression that the vehicle is available for hire, I shouldn't think that would be a problem.
