After months of looking on and off for a Fairway Driver I finally bought one....Model year 95. Been in the same family from new, came off service December 2012...and not a lot of rust (amazingly) and drives tight as a drum, most I saw/drove were slack and, well you know what....my '79 Corvette Stingray has now gone to pastures new but the taxi is far more fun! Really straight guy selling too....he has a small taxi fleet and repair business.

few questions though:

1/ I've been fiddling with the taxi lights.....I know the rules about not having them working on the road, but as I said just fiddling being the curious sort......the one on the B post which say 'taxi for hire' also has another row of lights that go 'blue'.....what does this mean...'not on hire'?

2/ She has the Van Aaken Euro 3 system...looks to me no more than a EGR system and maybe a DPF (diesel particulate filter system) can anyone clarify this? I used to be a engine R&D guy and I think this may go in the bin....these N/A 2.7 are wheezy at the best of times....I didn't want the low pressure turbo system, simply to keep things simple.

3/ Why would the taxi have a previous MOT from 2012 etc whilst still on license...I thought that with the PCO test an MOT would not be required...forgot to ask the seller?

cheers for now guys...great site you have here 8)

The blue light is for when "hired".The van aaken emisions can easily be stripped out if you want to,if its running ok why bother ? As for mot it wouldnt have needed one in London as its certificate of compliance maybe he got one as looks better selling it.

Cheers for that.....I have just heard that now its two mots per year plus one pco test?

.....just a thought. If you used your taxi for off time use, would you need an mot?

Running fine, so may stick with the euro 3 at the moment.

Cheers

Hi,
Mine has the Van Aaken system and the exhaust barely makes any smoke. You do have to take it for a decent drive once every 2 weeks or so over 40 mph. I am tempted to remove it but I don't want the car to start guffing out black smoke so I'll leave it until it becomes troublesome.

I spent a bit more time looking at the van aaken system....its really quite an elegant solution and well engineered. Mine doesn't smoke even when on full load.

Easy to remove, air filter drops back to original inlet position, reconnect the heater hose directly to heater, remove egr pipe from exhaust (new original downpipe if required). Remove throttle position switch.
What I haven't found yet is the dpf (diesel particulate filter) light off control....must be there somewhere....usually injected diesel to burn off parts.....similar to alfa Romeo jtd system

Its quite a while since i saw one,did have it on another cab and removed it seemed a bit sluggish. Is the light off control not in the box next to wiper motor ? Seem to remember something there.Anyway if it aint broke as the saying goes, good luck
