Hi all, I've had a number of real problems with my Fairway driver since buying it last may. Brakes now sorted (new calipers) Leaking steering box (replacement box) and dodgy tyres (now replaced. I've got a newer P reg one and my N reg is going to live in France and is supposed to be going on a ferry a week today. However, dister has struck once again! I tried to start her this PM and no joy - thought was a flat Battery - AA man comes along tried to jump start even using the dreaded easy start she wont go. he suspects the diesel pump. Is this right and if so how expensive is this to put right ( I have no technical expertise)! Added to this the dip has gone on the nearside headlights _ replaced bulb ( and dropped the clip down a drain in the process!) but no joy. Did the same for the non working number plate lights. I've looked at the fuses and cant seem to see any broken ones. So any ideas and where can i get a new clip from? Sorry to be all moaney - but I want to make sure she is right for my mate to take her to her new life in France. As always any advice much appreciated. Ta |

I suspect you'd get a clip from most car accessories store, eurocarparts ? Electrics are notoriously tempremental and hard to diagnose without looking .Have you power going to no plate light ? Door handle is a easy, ish fix.Take door panel and fittings off, then theres a small bar that clips into handle from locking motor, unclip this. Then theres three nuts that hold the handle on ,undo these and it will come off.Only thing is be carefull dropping stuff in door ,fecker to find again !!! As for fuel pump thats a bigger job, what are the symptoms,is it turning over at all, have you any smoke coming out of exhaust if it is turning over ? Only changed one once and wouldnt do another ! Its a big enough job to do,aswell as sourcing one.Dont forget if its a auto it has to be a auto pump. |

Thanks Mate. It doesn't help that I suspect the battery to be the wrong one and a bit dodgy hence the initial thought that it was flat. With the AA man connecting both the booster and to his van she did turn over and attempt to start but just would not kick in. His view is that it is probably the pump acting up. |

When the engine refuses to fire, provided the battery is the right Amp and fully charged, it can be two things : - the transmission lever is not fully engaged on "P" - the anti-start relay is corroded/burnt: you find it next to the two glowplug relays in the engine bay. I'd check these two electrical points before suspecting the ignition pump, there would have been tell-tale signs before it ceases to work! If the cab goes to France, the headlights will have to be replaced anyway (usually with Austin Mini LHD headlamps), so I wouldn't bother much with the sidelights at this stage... |

BTW where in France are you? My cab is going to my French chum near Luxembourg. I'm sure he'd be grateful for some advice on stuff if you were so willing. |

The lights are easy, remove the trim around them remove light unit, undo the screws holding the backing and pull right hand edge towards you put screws back one of them goes in the new screw hole on the right, thats the backing aligned for Europe, put lights back in |

I live quite far from Luxembourg, so wouldn't be able to help directly your friend. Meanwhile he may get some info and advice in French from these two websites: http://www.taxianglais.fr http://kabhi2011.free.fr |

Finally my top motor wallah has fixed her. tried all manner of things like ether to start her to no avail. Turns out as suspected a leccy problem which (and here's where my knowledge fails so i might get it wrong) caused the pump to retard itself so much no fuel would get through. So with the new door lock on (oh the joys of having a working door lock), she is ready to go and will be heading to la belle France on Saturday. Thanks for all your advice comrades. |
