Post subject:  Fairway Fuel Gauge Not Registering

My 1997 Fairway's fuel gauge has stopped working.

When I pulled up, it was fine. Five minutes later, when I restarted the engine, it was registering empty. (It's actually nearly full).

Has anyone had the same problem, and how did you manage to fix it?

I've replaced the spade connector on the earth wire on the sender unit, to no avail, but I'm not sure what to do next.

I have many old bills for my cab, and see that a new sender unit was fitted in 2011 - only 10,000 miles ago.

If I go into a Motor Factor, does anyone know what type of sender unit to ask for?

Many thanks in anticipation!

Chris.

If you go to the fuel sender unit - disconnect the 2 wires from the sender and then link the 2 wires, the fuel gauge should then rise.

If it rises you have a faulty fuel sender unit.

If it doesn't you either have a faulty gauge or a wire is broken between the sender and the gauge.

Most probably a faulty fuel sender unit: I had it replaced on two of my cabs!
Here is what you need: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LTI-LONDON-TA ... 396wt_1161

The sender looks the same type fitted to lots of older cars. The one on my p5b failed and I was quoted forty odd quid for one.
Taking it to bits was easy, bending over a couple of tags revealed a brake in the wires inside a couple of minutes with a soldering iron and its working again.

Thank you for your suggestions, especially Captain Cab.

I bought a new sender unit, have tested it OK using a multimeter. I also tested the old unit, and it was faulty. I've also tested the wiring to the gauge, as suggested, and the gauge registers when the ignition is switched on. So - good sender unit. Good wiring to working gauge. Spade connectors also checked OK STILL WON'T WORK! Suggestions, please?!?!?!

Rather than a multimeter I'd try connecting the sender unit with it outside the tank and then moving the float assembly by hand.

Thanks, Baker's Dozen. Yes - I did that before I installed the new sender unit. As a classic car owner, I know only too well the quality of some of today's car parts! Interestingly, the sender I took out was only put in in 2011, and the cab's only done 11k miles since.

Sure youve tried it ,but is there power to the guage on the instrument panel, there could be a bad connection with the circuit.Good luck
