Hi everyone, New as member, just got my first Fairway Driver 95. Steering has a lot of play when driving, could anyone tell me what to look for first please? Also should bonnet still have a little bounce in it or should it be completely fixed when closed. Sorry to bombard with questions, but have loved reading the forum, and everyone seems really helpful and friendly. Must admit I can't stop smiling when driving my old ex cab. |

Check all the ball joints in the steering for play. There's quite a few IIRC |

The bonnet is adjustable by the two 'stays' that go into the holds. They can be screwed up or down to adjust .It should sit on the rubber stops on valance |

Your problem is your tie rods. There are 6 of them. 3 RH side and 3 LH side. Should look like this: http://www.londontaxigroup.com/product/ ... way-sfx107 Check for play and if the rubber is missing, it's probably rusting and must be replaced. I would suggest bringing it into a shop to replace and to have an alignment afterwards. Have it done right since you don't want to lose your steering at high speeds or wear out your tires. |

Mate youve a strange taxi if youve got three each side ! Presume you mean track rod ends

There is also a bolt on the steering box that can be tightened slightly to take up any play |

There are 6 track rod ends to check. I would also check the top and bottom balljoints and upper wishbone bushes, the lower bushes seem to last forever. The chassis has a tendency to crack where the steering box mounts , so also worth checking. The bolt refered to above, you'll find on the steering idler and although some think it takes the slack out the steering it shouldn't be tightened in situ as it has a tabbed nut and its two needle rollers in there not taper bearings! Whilst your doing the front end you should check the front wheels bearings and adjust as neccesary as these can make the steering feel skiddish when theyr'e loose. |

I think the play in a fairways steering is all part of its charm. When going from lock to lock, hearing and feeling all those joints take up the slack reminds me of a long train pulling away from a station in the days of steam.. |
