Post subject:  Fairway Fan Cooling

Just had to take my radiator out to fix a leak, whereupon I noticed that my fan for the engine cooling is completely free - it will spin freely around the shaft. Is this normal?!

I had a car once which heated a component up, which in turn gripped the shaft, so when the engine was cold the fan didn't spin, and vice versa, but I'm not sure if this is the same!

Any help appreciated.
