A puzzler.
I took my fairway in for an MOT and it failed on a bottom ball joint. The tester showed me and it had a 1/2 inch of up and down play. I was sure when I looked at it a few days ago it was fine but-no doubt about it the thing was bouncing up and down so badly I half thought of taking it home on a trailer.
It was an absolute swine to get the tapered pivot out of the bottom arm.The nut had been done up so tight that I had to use a 3/4 drive breaker bar.I broke my splitter, jacking it up on the stub and the old two hammer trick didn't work. In the end loads of heat,a jack under the stub with the weight of the car on it and a ten foot scaffold pole and jemmy made it part,it sounded like a clap of thunder when it finally moved. The two bolts holding the joint to the upright were tight as hell and rounded off,all in all the job took three hours.
I have the old swivel in front of me.There is no play at all and it moves and rotates smoothly no matter how hard I try to compress or stretch it there is no play,it doesn't even look worn.
Any ideas,or am I going ga ga ?.

Got the new one fitted (much easier than getting the old one off). The steering might be a bit better but maybe that's wishfull thinking.
Seems odd that the joints cost under a tenner yet one for my P5b rover which looks sort of similar is about ten times that.

Thats good ,they are cheap enough on parts which is a bonus, make sure you track it before you start scrubbing tyres
