I had a Mk1 transit that I fitted with a V6 engine. To increase the spring rate (leaf springs on the front) I fitted a couple of smallish coil springs between centre of the axle and chassis. It worked well. The U bolts on the picture above are the longest I've ever seen I wonder what they came off. |

I would guess that the U bolts are that long to start with so that you can actually fit them around the springs before tensioning. You could always cut the excess length off when they were fitted. |

If it was mine I'd have to cut them down,it just looks wrong plus they might damage pedestrians when you drive over them. |

problem is you can make them TOO heavy duty, might as well bolt some bricks between the axle and chassis instead
