I have just acquired a 1996 fairway and the fuel gauge isn't working! Seems to be a common fault. Do any of you experienced fairway owners know how to access the sender unit before I start lifting carpets and crawling underneath.

Its at the top of the tank in the boot, more than likely the wires will have corroded lift the rubber matting and you will see a round circular bit at the top with wires coming off it

Once you've lifted mat up in boot, youll see a circular disc that when removed reveals the sender.Touch the wires together and see if the fuel guage rises. If it does your sender is faulty, plenty on eBay.

:D Thanks you geezers, removed the plate, dodgy earth connection. Joined the wires, gauge went up to full, made a new earth and the gauge reads just over half which has fixed it! :D

Information is always helpful, a 10 second question can save 10 hours of work. Not many black cab drivers had rac breakdown cover as too expensive for taxis, it was raised considerably after mini cab drivers had the same membership card for several cabs
