Hi Guys

What temp should the needle be showing once the engine has warmed up?

I'm in Spain and it's hot here, I only do short journeys (20 minutes) and the temp. needle seems to stay around 3/4, is this normal? I obviously don't want to cook the car.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mr. T

So, should I just remove the thermostat or replace it with a new one? What would the effects be of having no thermostat?

Where abouts is the thermostat located?

Thanks again.

Follow the top hose from the rad to the engine, it will come to a dome shaped metal piece, with 2 or 3 bolts, with the engine cool, remove the bolts, half of this dome will come away with a bit of effort, inside you will find the thermostat, just pull it out, clean both sides of the dome off, get a new gasket or use some waterproof sealant, and join the bits back using the bolts, refill the rad run engine and check for leaks,

The engine will run cooler..but the heaters will be cold..this engine has a summer thermo and winter thermo..you need to find out what you have in yours...if you have a winter one in now, it will run hot..if you have a summer one in and its running hot...get back in touch....

thats late advice.....they are fitted now

soak them in plusgas over night and go easy on them, 2 nights if really tight

fit a summer thermo and a switch from the rad sensor to the dash (across the 2 blades) so you can switch the fan on, i take it the fans do cut in?

Hello and thank you everybody !!

Apparently there are 2 types of thermostats, hot climate and cold climate; I’ve ordered the hot climate one (opens at 82º). I’ll fit it once it arrives and I’ll let you know of the results.

On another note

I have another TX1, 2.7 diesel coming over to me here later this week, my brother had a quick look at it and told me that it has the following issues.
1. When you drive the car, although it works fine and registers the speed etc. the speedo makes a clicking sound which is quite annoying, I don’t know if the speedo cable can be disconnected from the speedo head without removing the speedo. Is there a common fault, do you think it’s the speedo or the cable that might be at fault?
2. The car has left a small puddle of oil on the driveway; it looks like it could be coming from the pas box, but it’s hard to say because there is a lot of oil all over the underside of the engine compartment. Any known culprits that I should look for first?
3. The car takes a long time to fire up, apparently it turns over for a quite a long time, almost fires up, then continues cranking over and finally fires up coughing and spluttering, once it gets going it does seem to idle well. Any ideas?
I realize I might be asking some silly questions, but I trust you’ll be patient with me. I’m just trying to get some info of possible or known issues before I take the car into the Spanish mechanics.

Thank you all for your past help and thanking you in advance.

Saj

Take it to Jock at English motor mechanics Marbella, has to be in for 8 or you can do one
Starting issues could mean glow plugs needing renewed, bad earth, check earth straps from chassis to engine, by using a jump lead from the neg on the battery to a bolt on the engine

Thanks Skippy!

The problem is that I live in North Spain; it’s about a 10 hour drive to Marbella, so not really feasible.

I just wanted some pointers, before trying to explain in Spanish to the local mechanic, also I didn't want to be taken for a ride, with them saying that it needs this that and the other, especially if they haven't seen or worked on a LTI Taxi before. I know that the engine is the same as a Terrano and I'm sure that they've worked on those, but it's a case of trying to be as informed as possible, that way I could possibly have a go at the car myself before being held at mercy.

Just like the Fairway, the steering boxes always leak. A new seal can be obtained or just put a dab of brake fluid in with the power steering fluid. It helps to sweat the seal.
