My ‘F’ reg Metro has drum brakes. What is happening is that one of the front wheels is getting hotter than the other side. I mean hot, as you cannot touch the wheel for too long.
Now before you start giving me reasons why this is happening. Let me give you a bit of history.
It is the brakes that are causing the problem. The linings are wearing down on the side that gets hot. When the drum is taken off the lining has cracked broken up. This will happen after a few weeks or about only 600 miles.
At first this happened on the nearside front. I had a complete reline on both fronts. But still the problem persisted and again the shoes were replaced both sides and with slave cylinders rubbers replaced and system bled.
Now it has gone to the other side. Off side front. That is getting hot.
The garage that I use has checked yet again by taking both wheels off and drums. The shoes and linings looked normal.
We tested if one side was coming on early by applying the brake slowly until the brake starts to bite on one side and checking that the other side is also just on. It was Ok.
When the naughty side gets really hot with continues braking it starts to squeal and there is a slight temporary pull to this side as I brake. But the cab still stops in a straight line. (Hands off steering wheel).
Otherwise the braking is good.
Any Ideas why this is happening or what is wrong?

Do you think I would get a loan for the 35k for a TX11? I think I could pay off about 7shillings and sixpence a week if I did not have any dinner on sundays. :sad:

Mr T saw your plight from the other forum, he suggests the following:

Re the Metro:if the metal brake pipes on the back of the drum have been checked to see if one of them has been pinched, it used to happen a lot when people were doing kingpins, it makes like a one-way valve keeps the brake on.

Hope this helps, he would have answered you himself, but hes barred from TDO. :sad:

Thanks for that GBC. I did look at the pipes the other day when I adjusted the brakes.
Also this does not explain why the problem has shifted from the nearside to the offside when the reline and re-rubber was done.

Your mate has a relatively simple problem , when the brakes sticks on, it gets hot, that heat is transferred into the brake fluid, the brake fluid expands within the pipes, which in turn causes the brakes to apply themselves, the same as you putting your foot on the break, from what he says, the question that has to be asked is, when his brakes were realigned did his near side drum go back on the near side, or did it go back on the off side, if it did and the fault transferred across, then he might have a Oval drum , Mr T. :wink:

Again thanks to GBC and Mr T.
First the drums were replaced on the same wheel. As for the theory of the hot fluid and the brake sticking on. That is not so. As I would hear the brake binding and the brake pedal would go very hard. ( I have experienced this in the past on other cabs when the brake is binding.) The Brake has to get hot before the fluid gets hot. The brake fluid system is not presureised so if the fluid expands, which it does the presure vents out through the filler cap
Also When I have jacked up the cab the wheel runs free.
