Ok, i bought a budget tyre.......my bad

245/40x18

after 11,000 miles its making a droning noise, supplier said "your lucky to get 11k out of a budget, i replied its got 6mm left, its faulty not fckued

i put my spacesaver spare on to prove its at fault

i think the tread is "castlelated or sawtoothed"

Sawtooth wear - is that the badly worn strip on the inside of the tyres, sounds wheel bearing-ish?

Been getting that with rear tyres on my current motor and previous one, although worn strip not as wide as in photo.

Don't think it's a budget tyre thing necessarily - was getting it with the original Continental tyres on my current motor, and original Dunlops on the last one.

In fact on my last motor the cheaper tyres were *less* noisy than the branded ones, and in fact that's one reason I buy budget tyres - if they have to be replaced when half worn then it's obviously not so bad if it's a £50 tyre rather than a £150 one.

Lots of theories about this, but dealer doesn't seem to have definitive answer. Suggestions include the obvious camber/alignment/geometry issues, or things like firmness of the tyre compound - softer more prone to the wear.

the wear is even across the tread, its been on the front remember so amazing the inner/outer tread is all good BUT the blocks of the tread are up...down....all over

id estimate 20k+ miles would be possible looking at the tread, ive been chasing the noise as if bearings were at fault, braking made the noise louder, ive put discs/pads on all round too besides 2 hubs with nearings

Never had any particular problems with budget tyres, think I got about 28,000 out of last *front* pair, still a lot of tread on the rears after 40,000 or so, but intend replacing soon because of the droning noise.

Just hoping the droning *is* the sawtooth wear on the inside.

By the way, think I've had MoT advisories for it, other times they've ignored it.

also found suspicious rub marks on the strut

if the tyre is reaching that far out its some serious wobble issue id have expected to feel at 70mph but they should have shown up on the balancing, though the problems are quite recent, theres no wheel shake at any speed to speak of

tomorrow i shall clean the strut and put some tape where the marks are, the wheel has been off quite a few times so this may have been from the times work was done, and nothing to do with the wheel/tyre, if the tyre rubs it i suspect a really bad tyre..........or its far wider than a 245/40 x 18 should be
