Midway on an otherwise promising night, the cab did a rough downshift pulling up at a junction. From then on, it seems to be stuck in 3rd gear although 1st and 2nd work with the lever. Turned off and restarted - same but steady engine management light comes on as soon as it's running. Noticeable 'lurch' going into D or R. So my work for this weekend is done.

Gearbox serviced 6 months ago at reputable place, fluid on the mark and looks clean. Never two-foot the pedals.

I'm guessing it's now storing a fault code which will need read/cleared anyway, and see what that says.

Otherwise, does this sound familiar to anyone?

Interim diagnosis - faulty gearbox solenoid pack.

Replacement part is around £450 and fitting requires opening the pan, so add another £150 for a filter kit and Chrysler ATF+4 fluid plus labour. I've put the job on hold just now - when I set off to the garage, the fault had self-cleared and the cab is back to driving normally (so to speak and for now).

If it helps anyone else, the engine sensors (cam/crank/MAF etc) can cause the same gearbox symptoms described in the first post. The software scan checked and cleared them this time.

The gearbox solenoid pack can get problems from damp/corrosion in its multiplug connector on top of the transmission case. This may be reachable without opening the gearbox. But if it is corroded, removing the multiplug risks damaging the pins on the solenoid pack side. Personally, I wouldn't try it at home unless you're ready to replace the solenoid pack itself.
