hiya just a quick question we have a new l.o just started and he wants to set the world on fire as they all do. but thats not the problem the problem is the way he speaks to drivers for example we block the end of the rank to stop cars pulling on its always the end car that sits at the rank entrance to stop private cars etc pulling in to the rank anyway last week he approached one of our lady drivers with no badge showing or anyway of id'ing him and said to her very rudely move now or else and there are plenty of other examples of his rudeness what can we do to put him in his place?

You will probably find there is a bylaw stating you must move up the rank as spaces become available. When confronting officials make sure you have the law on your side.

So your argument is that the LO could be more civil in his approach?

Just write a letter to the licensing committee chairman explaining you and your colleagues are not happy with the licensing officers communication skills and that on several occasions his approach has been abrasive and officious and that you want to know if this practice is council policy?

Or words to that effect?

Regards

JD

If the LO is new then clearly he is trying to big himself up.

As JD suggest write to the licensing chair or the council's chief executive saying that licensed drivers aren't sh**, so they don't want to be spoken to like it.

oh yea he is trying to big his self up large he is trying to implement about 15 new laws all in one hit but we as an association are fighting em on every bit he even tried saying he was gonna charge us £18.80 to seal our meters but on our list of charges it says plainly that they will only charge £5 if the proprietor requests the seal the donut obviously didnt check his own dept's paperwork we told them no way are we paying that and all of a sudden last night the new charge was dropped

I think it is important for you all to make sure that you are always pleasent to this chap so that you don't give him any more ammunition to shoot you with. He obviously has his brief that has probably been agreed with the licensing committee and it is the committee that will need to reine him in if he oversteps the mark. I'm sure he will soon settle down.

he was the l.o from the next borough and according to sources he was a complete fatherless child he is trying amongst other things to rush through colour coding but we dont want it so we are gonna hit him with case law from durham etc and also we are gonna hit em with a freedom of info request on licencing funds to make em squirm and to get a rebate on our plate renewals they charge approx 350 a year here for plate

I had a situation back about 6 weeks ago it was nights and this chap who I thought was a punter came up to my car, I was polite and asked him "what can I do for you". He reached inside my windscreen towards my displayed licences saying you do not need that, I grabbed his arm saying no one touches that unless you are police or licensing and only then when you have identified yourself.

He went on to say that he thought that as I had spoken to him that I knew him, he then produced his I.D as it so happened he was an L.O but nevertheless He was in the wrong!

I have also had the same with plain clothes police, out one night and the shout comes "YOU MOVE" I look around to see who is speaking to a dog, the shout again comes "MOVE" at the same time this guy moves away. As he moves away I politely ask "who are you" he stops and says police, he starts to move further away, ummm can I see your warrant card please, by now he is walking towards me huffing and puffing and fumbling in his inside pocket and produces what could have been anything, as he starts to walk away I said can I see it properly because what you produced was upside down. The ( by now "Officer" ) came all the way back glaring daggers at me to show his warrant I.D - although I was parked on double yellows and partly on the pavement, nothing happened and he was quite clearly in the wrong.

All of the above is true, because whenever anyone speaks to me in a less that civil manner - I will p!ss them off.

No matter who it is "they have to I.D themselves" otherwise you could be taking illegal instructions from any Tom Richard or Harry.

I also had the same situation on another night when the L.Os were out and about checking documentation - can I see your I.D please came the question, me to them - can I see yours - she to me but you know me - me to her you could be cloned but you know me also.

She to me - so you are going to make me go into my handbag to find it -Me, well you should display your I.D but I will let you off this time, you could see her workmate was practically wetting herself with inner laughter as the woman concerned was without humour - but she will not forget me again - but do I care

jogra4, maybe another approach, much along the lines Grandad suggested is to arrange a meeting with this guy.

Let him shout and bluster all he likes but if you maintain a conciliatory approach all the way through you'll soon wear him down and start working to the benefit of both parties.

It may be worth a try.

Whilst I agree 100% with JD, don't leave yourself out on a limb. If he had upset a number of drivers, you should make sure they all sign the letter, or better still get them to write their own letters of complaint, making sure they are all posted together.

You know what this trade is like; they'll get you to do all the spouting & writing & when it gets hot, they usually turn round & deny any involvement.

"What me sir, no, not me sir!"
