'I'm Irish' Stickers Further Stoke Taxi Tensions

18th September 2008

Stickers with the words "100% Irish" have been spotted on the back of taxis, indicating that the taxi driver is an Irish national.

"I am quite concerned about this practice, if it is the case. I hope that it was only a small minority of taxis that were displaying it," said Philip Watt from the National Consultation Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI).

Tommy Gorman, President of the National Taxi Drivers Union, was cautious about the display of these stickers on cabs. "I don't know if drivers are going to get away with that," he said.

However, Mr Gorman said that there are mounting tensions within the taxi industry.

"We are starting to see the case of drivers boxing each other on ranks over fares," he said.

Data compiled by the National Consultation Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) found that there were 50 racist incidents reported in Ireland between January and July of this year. The information found that 10pc of these incidents related to taxi services.

"There are ongoing challenges regulating the [taxi] industry, but I am confident that we will see a reduction of racist incidents in the near future," said Mr Watt.

Mr Gorman, from the National Taxi Drivers Union, discussed one case where a foreign national taxi driver skipped others waiting at a rank.

He also referred to passengers who chose to skip a queue to go in another taxi.

The Commission for Taxi Regulation stated that they have "regulations in place regarding the placement of advertising and other notices on vehicles".

A spokeswoman said that without knowledge of the case, the commission would not be able to comment.

"It's worth noting that all taxi drivers are required to pass the same licence application process," the spokeswoman said.

"Customers should be confident that all drivers should meet the same levels of service."

The Committee on Racism and Interculturalism wants to see a stronger stance against racism by passengers and taxi drivers.

Being binational I have a little Red Dragon on one side and a Red Cross on the other, on the back of my cab.
In London we have, in the past been warned by the PCO not to put the English flag on the back of our vehicles. No mention was ever made of any other flag!
My cab was passed by SGS with these stickers on as I forgot to take them off.
Now it has been passed does that make them authorised?

There is nothing racist about taking pride in your nationality.
Anyone who thinks there is needs help.

That'll be ED Thompson then that needs help, he made a statement in the trade press that London Taxi's could only display the English flag on the day of the game or match. after which it has to be removed so as not to offend any one. What could he possibly mean by this statement.

If someone chooses to live in England, why should they be offended by an English flag?

PC cr*p, nothing more.

Several hacks down here have "This taxi is driven by an Englishman" on the front passenger window.

Been there for several years now.

Darren63,
the wording actually is "The Driver of this cab is an Englishman" and the LO's have checked with Legal Department of PCC. As it is a statement of fact only, it is allowed. More and more Cabs have it, and I believe the sign maker has it available on his machinery - you pay the money, he pushes a button - you put it in.
