Taxi driver fined for using mobile phone

A TAXI driver has been fined after he was caught using a mobile phone while driving.

Daniel Peek, 31, was stopped by police officers after he was seen driving his black Metrocab while using the phone on February 21.

Magistrates in Neath heard he had then been asked to produce his driving licence and insurance certificate at a police station, which he failed to do.

The court was told that it was not known whether Peek had been carrying a fare-paying passenger at time he was stopped.

Peek, of Upper West End, Taibach, admitted driving while using a mobile phone and failing to produce his documents.

A further charge of driving without insurance was withdrawn.

Representing himself, he told the court that he believed he had sent the relevant documents to the authorities.

District Judge Richard Williams fined him £65. He was also ordered to pay £60 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

I believe that a taxi opperator in my town had his private hire operators license taken away for a similar offense.

Yes his operators license. You know one of them things that private hire operators need. It was taken away because he was allegedly taking bookings on his mobile (not hands free) whilst carrying passengers and he was reported.

Surely the PH Drivers license would have been more apt?

That is what I would have thought but I think it was the taking of the booking whilst driving that did it. If it was his missus asking him what time he was going to be home it may have been his drivers badge.

I think there was probably a bit more to it than just the mobile phone. There were lots of stories from customers who said he often used to fall asleep whilst driving, I have had at least 3 customers who had, allegedly, had experience of this so It may be that this was just the straw that broke the camels back.
