'Lying' private-hire driver faces jail
Bradford Nil!
A Bradford private-hire driver looks set to lose his licence for lying about a speeding fine, a court heard today.
Mohammed Shazad was told by a judge it was “stupid and foolish” to try to cover his tracks by pretending he had sold his car.
Shazad, 29, admitted obstructing the police on September 25.
His plea of not guilty to perverting the course of justice was accepted by the Crown.
Prosecutor Giles Bridge told Bradford Crown Court that Shazad, of no fixed address, was a private-hire driver with Leeds City Council. At 11.30pm on March 22 he was clocked doing 37mph in a 30mph zone in Otley Road, Leeds.
In June, when interviewed by officials from Leeds City Council and the police, he said he was not at the wheel. He claimed he had sold the vehicle to a man in Bradford Moor.
But Mr Bridge said the “buyer” named by Shazad did not exist and the address he gave for him had been empty for six years.
On September 25, Shazad again lied to the police, the court heard.
His barrister, Simon Myers, said he was of good character and thoroughly ashamed.
His lies had lost him the job he was trying to preserve.
Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC conditionally discharged Shazad for 12 months.
He told him: “I don’t know what got into you.”
The judge said Shazad was a thoroughly decent man trying to escape consequences that would have been far less serious than the offence he now faced.
