Bradford taxi drivers warned over imposter

Taxi drivers are being warned to watch out for a man posing as a Bradford Council inspector demanding cash from unsuspecting cabbies.

The man, who has been seen driving a beige Land Rover Freelander, has on two separate occasions stopped taxis, claiming to work for Bradford Council’s hackney carriage unit.

He has then claimed they have committed a driving offence and threatened that their driver’s licence would be suspended unless they pay an on-the-spot fine of £50.

West Yorkshire Police have been informed about the impersonator and the Council is warning taxi drivers to be on their guard.

Drivers are being told to never hand over any money as Council inspectors will not ask for cash on the spot. They are also being warned to inform the police if they are stopped by the bogus inspector.

A spokesman for the Council’s Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Unit said: “We are aware that there is a bogus taxi inspector stopping drivers and asking for money.

“We have reported this to the police and warned the drivers to inform the police immediately if they are stopped.

“Drivers should not hand over any cash as genuine Council inspectors never ask for money on the spot. If any taxi drivers are stopped we would ask them to ask to see identification and examine this very carefully.”

Muhammad Ali, manager at City Taxis in Bridge Street, Bradford, said: “This person should be brought to justice. It’s an absolute disgrace to the taxi driving industry.

“This is the first time I’ve heard of something like this happening and I will tell all my drivers to be vigilant over Christmas. If they know of anything untoward I will be urging them to report it as soon as possible so that we can pass it on to the police.”

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6ft tall, of slim build with grey hair. The Land Rover Freelander has the registration X112 DBU, according to the Council’s warning to drivers.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the vehicle should contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606.

They can trace via the dumb-wits at the DVLA, but that still doesn't make you liable.
