Just to put the Durham 'Congestion Charge' onto prospective go to
http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/ ... harge+Zone
Durham City has a population of 87,000 (2001 census).
Old Trafford can hold 80,000 people and the Emirates 60.000.

Can we now return to what Manchester can learn from London's experience of the Congestion charge?

Congratulations to Mancunians for voting against the CC proposal!

You have learnt from the London fiasco and will not regret your decision.

And I'm over the moon that they will not be getting 3 billion to improve public transport.

Waste of money. :D

So now that all the districts have voted NO, how long will it be before it is introduced anyway?

Why a congestion charge is needed anywhere is beyond me, if its a problem with to much traffic then ban the traffic..but if its a charge to use a certain piece of road then it solves nothing and only serves to make money from the same amount of vehicles using the piece of road in question..the same amount of traffic causing the exact same amount of congestion. Im so glad the People of manchester seen through this money making scam.

It wouldnt be so bad if the manchester Authorities had put an alternative Public transport system in place first, but like all government bodies they chose to put the cart before the horse...then they wonder why it went so badly wrong for the Pro CC campaign.

this type of local authority and government thinking is exactly whats wrong with the whole of the Country, they cannot see past the words environmentally Friendly....they would much rather have every man, woman and child live in poverty and take our money to fund grandiose schemes to save our planet from so called global warming, the same global warming for which there is no proof positive is actually occurring, indeed many scientists are beginning to think the earth may be entering a cycle of cooling down..

nope..it was to be a Money making scam pure and simple but the people of manchester and indeed the people of the world are now beginning to see through this global warming charade..if only the Politicians could see through it too it would be a better planet for all of us, the real fact is that our Impotent and incompetent politicians love the global warming scare as it diverts attentions away from their inabilities to sort out the real issues that beset our world and also gives them a better chance to stay onboard the Politicians gravy train.

Why not ban the traffic and build multi storey car parks which of course people will have to pay for to use and then provide free public transport on a park and ride basis into the city centre. They could also provide taxi ranks for people who don't want to use the buses/trams (or whatever they have) to obtain taxis if they wish. Obviously the ban on traffic would only apply to general motorists and not buses and HC/PH taxis

Good Idea..i'l fetch them to the city limits...You Hacks and City Slicker PH's can take em to the town centre..it lets the Taxi Infrastructure thats already in place do the Job and Save tens of billions of public money on Half Baked super schemes that serve no one except the the greedy Councillors and the scheme Builders and Tram companies that Grease their palms , all in the name of development....if it aint broke why fix it and if it is broke why not fix it rather than replace it

Toots for Prime Minister.... =D>
