its odd that a trade where "london" cabs can have a shield between driver and passengers, and the driver neednt wear a seatbelt simply due to the chances of being attacked is so half-hearted about a security CCTV being fitted....

That's because not wearing a seat belt doesn't cost any money. I've always wondered why HC's drivers never needed to wear a seat belt when they have passengers in case they are attacked cos I'm kind of at blank when I think about how exactly the customer gets to them :? Unlike PH where the customer can quite easily restrain the driver, makes you think sometimes what people are thinking about when they make these stats.
toots.. you have to remember when the law was made... how many years ago.... and the vehicles that were in operation at the time.... as you know Hackney's can be both saloon and purpose built... I remember about 15 years ago a friend of mind was trapped by his seatbelt in his FX 4 while they held him at knifepoint until he gave them his night's takings, they still slashed him...they used to put their hand through the sliding window behind the driver's head and grab the seat belt.. thereby imprisoning the driver against the petition and the second one would jump out and open the driver's door and he would place a Stanley knife against the drivers face

As I said Mr T I had always wondered why this was the case. Most of the HC's I've ever been in have had full screens behind the driver with a little hole and a pot type thingy to put your fare in and collect any change etc. I do however remember being in a HC with a cage but the opening for passing fare through was located on the left side of the drivers shoulder and was very small. It was never my intention to imply it wasn't necessary. I am also under the impression that whilst it is quite legal for a HC driver not to wear his seatbelt it is a bit of a hit and miss with PH. The reason I think this way is because I have been told on a number of ocassions to put my belt on when I have been pulled in by police for random checks even though I've had passengers :?

If someone makes a complaint that a PH has picked up legally, then the LO can check out for himself if the customer corresponded with a real booking.

For anyone with a CCTV I would suggest at least two cameras, one looking forward and the other backward.

I don't think the problem is with the trade accepting enforcement, it's with the LOs lacking it.

I agree entirely. I don't think the trade does object to enforcement but it's wether the LO's have the funds to provide it

Having a picture of somebody getting into a PH does not mean that it is illegally plying for hire. Having on camera facing forward will show pictures in front of the vehicle. One camera facing backwards will show pictures of the back of the vehicle. How is this going to help the driver identify any trouble makers when they are in the vehicle? It is not the responsibility of taxi drivers to catch other drivers illegally plying for hire that is the job of the LO and pressure should be brought to bear to make them do their job.

The average system is between £300 and £700, so let's take the £700.

Paid over three years is £233.00 per year.

That over 50 weeks is £4.66 a week.

That over 6 days is 78p a day.

Even if you work on a 50% paid rate, 50% unpaid rate, it works out at 1.56p a mile.

For that it could save your life or save your job.

Well it does if the office doesn't have a booking for the job.

It would take all of 30 seconds to have a booking on our system for any job I picked up so that is why I say having a picture of same proves nothing unless of course the person getting into the PH taxi happens to be enforcement then the picture would be of assistance but not really necessary.

You should have said you was concerned about me I would have then told you needn't cos already have it

My arguement is why should we as taxi drivers have to pay for it when other public transport get assistance to have it installed. Whilst I personally think £4.66 is not a great deal of cash some people may find it difficult to find on top everything else on a regular basis.

I think Mr Sussex means legally through a slight fare increase to cover the costs.

The same way I recover £2 for a trip from the Airport and Radio Circuits charge £2 for a booked Taxi.
