get a grip skippy you may not pay a rental but you still have to pay out for the taxi ,insurance and all that goes with being a taxi owner its a never ending battle to run your own motor its not as simple as some make out but they have never been owners.

I agree Chip being an owner driver for the last 29 years its hard.
Insurance well if some of them have there own private cars they can transfer any NCB over if not they can pay it up and should if they are over 25 be able to get it for around £1200 in the first year, mine is only £450 fully protected they would not have to buy a new cab so the second hand sales could be given a hand, or they could buy the cab they use now from the owners

ok skip the insurance as you know is a small part of the picture you have breaks tyres etc etc and buying a 2nd hand taxi could in the long run cost you more to keep going than getting a new one with all the service stuff attached it all costs at the end of the day and if the market place is crammed with taxis how you going to pay for it when the work is thin on the ground like it is right now

Chip, When I started out it was with a loan of £25 from my old man, this was used as a deposit on a £300 Hillman Hunter estate (granted not a black cab but the principle is the same) I managed to get them to include hackney insurance in the hp agreement I started on a Friday afternoon and the following Monday i gave my old man his money back, I worked off the street for nearly 8 years without a phone, but i was the first owner to get a mobile installed in the cab down here.
In fact i was the first one to sit on the main st and charged £1.00 local and a £1.00 a mile on runs outwith the 30MPH signs

Yes Chipper, running a cab is expensive but it costs less to run one for yourself. Jockeys, as you call them, do not look after a cab as well as an owner driver does, so servicing also costs less.
Remember if there was no profit in renting, owners wouldn't do it.
Those who think it is worth it will get their own cab, others won't want the risk..
At least it will be their choice, not someone else's.
