A few points about the Union Flag.
1.Any national flag which is flown upside down is an internationally recognised signal of distress or surrender. But the story about the Union Flag flown upside down dates back to the BOAR War in southern Africa.
A British base was occupied by the BOARs and in order to entice the British Army to enter they ordered the solders to act normally which they did except they flew the Union Flag upside down.The BOARs didn't notice this but the British Army did and so avoided being taken prisoner.

2.The reason why there is a broad white diagonal on the mast side of the flag is that when the flag was created it was intended that neither the cross of St Andrew or St Patrick should be prominent.
So the compromise was on the mast side,the cross of St Andrew is prominent and on the fly side the cross of St Patrick is prominent.

It is......go to Scotland and see which flag is flown and which flag is highest.

It seems to me the only people who like the union jack are either grannies shouting for tim henman or english people who believe the british empire was a really good thing that enlightened the world.

This is incorrect.
The Union Flag is ALWAYS flown highest ,in the middle,in front or on the right in the case of a procession.
