I can't believe it! The pride of my fleet caught fire tonight. I saw what looked like a speeding camera flash where there are no cameras and thought how strange. I turned the next corner and saw a bit of smoke behind me. There was a police car aproaching from the opposite direction and he turned his blues on. I thought thats all I need, a bollocking for having a smoking exhaust but no, the policeman said "you are on fire mate." and his mate rushed round with a fire extinguisher. I got mine from the boot and we tried to put the flames out. At this point we realised that my passenger was still sitting in the car, he was expecting us to put out the fire and continue with the journey. I sugested to him that it may be a good idea to actually get out of the car whilst he still could.
With both of the extinguishers now used and the flames still comming from beneath the engine I probably did the most stupid thing in my life but there was a danger of the car going up and the bus that was parked in front of it but I got in a drove the damn thing into an empty car park about 50 yards down the road and we left it there for the fire brigade to sort out. My passenger then asked me how much he owed for the fare.   The meter was still running but I didn't have the heart to actually take any money from him. Considering we don't have a full time fire service in my town, the fire brigade were on the scene within about 10 minutes which impressed the police officers. The fire was contained within the engine compartment but god only knows what damage has been caused and how much it will cost to repair.
By the way this was in my Ford Galaxy and not one of the limos.

Sorry to hear of that, Pete.

Well done for your quick thinking. All sorts could have gone wrong if there were passengers on the bus and that had gone up!! A very brave and selfless action from my reading of it.

I hope you can get it back and running fairly promptly.

Diesel. We are just going out to recover the car and see what damage has been done.

must have been electrical then? unusal for diesels to have fuel fires as its such a poor burner! (unless its sprayed onto a redhot surface...)

Might have been an idea to maybe fan the flames and get it written off.

But glad no one was injured. [-o<

The garage has had a quick look at the Galaxy today. The gearbox bell housing has 2 holes in it where they think the flywheel has come apart and smashed through. The flywheel would be spinning quite fast and contacting the bell housing created so much heat that it ignited the gearbox oil.
