Taxi Driver's Cab Petrol-bombed

17 July 2009

South Shields

A taxi driver told today how he tackled a blaze after his cab was petrol-bombed.

A window was smashed before someone threw a plastic bottle inside the Chrysler Voyager, parked outside the driver's home in Jutland Avenue, Hebburn, last night.

Neighbours told police they spotted someone riding away from the scene on a bike after the attack at 10.45pm.

The 42-year-old driver, who didn't want to be identified, said: "I was just watching TV when there was a big, orange flash at the window.

"I ran outside and the car was on fire. I threw water over the flames, but the interior was badly damaged.

"I've no idea why I was picked on, but this could be a case of mistaken identity."

Hebburn fire crew manager Ian Robson said: "It appears a petrol bomb, containing some sort of accelerant, was used to start the fire."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

We had a spate of them around here about 7 years ago, it was when the council de regulated and people started buying WAVS, one got burned out while it was on the owners drive, that was a Metrocab so it didn't need much to start it. All the others were TX's.
