Cabbies caught short by wardens

FURIOUS Crewe cabbies claim it is costing them up to £70 to spend a penny.

Taxi drivers who use the Delamere Street rank are livid because they claim traffic wardens are ticketing them when they get out of their vehicles to go to use a nearby toilet.

Simon Ward, of SJ Taxis, said: “They’re moving us off. If we want to go to the toilet they’re saying we have to move off the rank but then we lose our place.

“They’ve booked some drivers for going to the toilet. They’re saying we should move off here and park on the car park.”

If the cabbies park in the Delamere Street car park they have to pay. They also inevitably lose their place and have to queue to get back on the rank.

Mr Ward said: “About four or five drivers have been booked so far. It’s not right.”

Some drivers have claimed they are an easy target for the traffic wardens.

They say it’s almost as if they lie in wait for them and then pounce the minute they get taken short.

The cabbies have also been ticketed for parking on the double yellow lines in Delamere Street.

One said: “Why have they got double yellow lines there? The road is wide enough to get three buses along there. We don’t have anywhere else to wait to get on the rank. They just tell us to drive around but where?”

A Cheshire East spokesman said: “Taxi drivers cannot leave their vehicles unaccompanied on a rank at any time. It’s also illegal to park on double yellow lines.”

He said these were two of the conditions they agreed to when they signed for the licences.

He added: “We do try to be reasonable but we will ticket people if need be.”

Perhaps they need to delimit the number of loos, or restrict the number of wardens. :?

This is outrageous. Our conditions specifically forbid leaving a cab unattended on a rank 'except to visit a toilet.'

Parking on DYLs is not illegal. Parking violations have been de-criminalised.

I know I keep on about this but, if a couple of them go to www.pepipoo.com and post tickets on there, the experts will advise if the tickets themselves are compliant. This needs fighting.
