Lets say you pick up off the rank and the job takes you out to the countryside, the passengers have asked you to take them to so and so.

you get to the destination, the passengers say ok take the next un signed turn [track] leading to some farm 2 or 3 miles inland

You look in horror it's worst than the tank training ranges, big pot holes all the way

would it be reasonable to say no thanks not in this motor, but they insist you go down or you don't get paid, and how about getting paid as you have not completed the journey to where they want to be

As soon as your meter is on you should get paid.

You are within your right to reasonably refuse to drive anywhere. Particularly if it is off the public highway and likely to damage the vehicle. as long as you explain the reason why in a calm and professional manner they should understand that, and not just say something like " no f-ing way and i going down that s**tty road"

They must pay what is on meter, if they refuse then the law is (apparently) on your side. but if they get funny about it im sure you would knock a quid or two off (as if its out in the sticks its sure to be a decent fare anyway) just to save yourself the hassle of getting the plod involved and chasing it through the court.

Or you cuold always go down but tell them beforehand that the first time you bottom out you go not further.

It would be entirely reasonable for you to refuse to get your car damaged, and it would be entirlely un-reasonable for your customers to a) ask you to do it, and b) refuse to pay what's on the meter.

As for not getting paid for not taking them to the front door, well it's the same as when they live on the 15 floor of a block of flats.
