Police car and taxi collide in Liverpool’s London Road
A BUSY city centre road was closed to rush-hour traffic after a police car crashed into a taxi.

The incident occurred at around 4.50pm at the junction of London Road and Moor Place, outside the popular TJ Hughes store, leaving debris scattered across the street.

The police car was on its way to an incident in Wirral.

The two vehicles, both with their front ends significantly damaged, were left on the road for more than an hour as traffic was diverted from the scene by officers.

The driver of the private-hire taxi, named by firm Botanic Cars only as Mick, was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital with injuries to his hand and non-serious head injuries.

He was discharged later last night.

A second police officer, who was the front-seat passenger, was also taken to the Royal to be treated for a non-serious head injury.

He was discharged at around 7pm.

Witnesses to the collision said the police vehicle, a marked Vauxhall Vectra estate, was heading down the hill in London Road, towards the Empire Theatre, with lights flashing.

They claimed traffic lights at the Moor Place junction were on red, but said the police car did not stop and collided with the taxi, a Volkswagen Passat, as it turned right into London Road.

The taxi driver, said to be in his early 30s and new to the job, was cut out of the car but was conscious. One witness, who asked not to be named, said: “As soon as the police driver came out of the crash, he jumped straight out of the car and ran to the taxi driver to see if he was all right.

“He must have been on a call, because another three police cars went straight past after him.

“The other policeman’s head was bleeding but he seemed all right. He just dived out of the car and over to the wall.”

Merseyside police confirmed the police vehicle was making its way to a call in Cleveland Street, Birkenhead, but would not confirm whether the car had skipped a red light, saying an investigation was under way.

A police spokesperson said: “A police vehicle had a collision with a private hire vehicle yesterday afternoon in London Road.

“The police vehicle was responding to a job in Birkenhead at 4.50pm when it collided with a taxi at the junction between London Road and Moor Place.

“The taxi driver was taken to hospital with injuries to his hand and non-serious head injuries.

“An inquiry is now under way into the collision by the accident investigations team.”

London Road was reopened by 7pm.

No wonder the public get confused between phv and taxis when the press always refer to phv as taxis.


I think safety concern charities like cab wise,Suzy lamplugh trust and brake, ect should bring this to the politicians attention.

Is their more folk Killed by PHs illegally plying or is their more folks Killed by speeding police cars....then lets see who should be brought to the attention of Brake etc...my moneys on plod..

The definition of a jounalist is someone who knows nowt hears nowt and never tells the truth well at least according to a government minister who was being interviewed on the radio a few years back

I was annoyed about the ECHO journalist mentioning the word 'taxi', but what annoys me more is the term 'private hire taxi'.

Not saying any more... it winds me up too much.
