In Brum there is presently no funding for NVQ courses & the grapevine is strong with rumours that there will not be any new funding from the new financial year starting 1st April 2010.

What is the situation is your area & what do you know about these alleged funding shortages?

I did allude to this in a different thread, I seem to recall people not being too sympathetic to my thoughts.

I did say something about this in another post. As far as I am aware the problem with the funding is it has gone relatively unchecked for years and the pot provided for funding has never been fully used. In recent years the uptake for NVQ's has risen and exceeded the funding pot so there is now a rethink for the allowance made by government for funding NVQ's. The funding of the taxi NVQ is not an individual pot it comes from a central pot for NVQ's so if there is no funding available for that NVQ there will be no funding available for any NVQ  I think that the criteria for obtaining NVQ funding maybe tightened in future.

Apart from all that there is the possible change of government which may see a totally different outlook on things come May or June this year, who knows :?

I do know that Sefton struggled to get funding but it is now available. For how long I don't know

If public spending is cut due to the economy then the chances are the money from the pot will be tightened or the NVQ's will probably go to the wayside. A new Sefton driver told me that new starters get twelve months in the job before having to do theirs, not sure if it's true but even if the pot did run out and these people new to the trade cannot complete the NVQ due to lack of funding then you can be assured the money will be found. Someone ending back on the dole and claiming housing benefit probably claim £1500 nicker in about three months. Either that or the deadlines will be prolonged. Sefton for current drivers have until October 2014.

The worse case secenerio is that the candidate will have to fund their own training  This however should give candidates a choice of the kind of training they obtain and providing it's a pre licence requirement the only people likely to loose out will be the large PH operators and those already working and wanting to taxi drive for a second income. I personally won't loose any sleep over this

I do recall this was mentioned in a conversation with you quite a few months back now when it was suggested that the training will cease as soon as the NVQ became a requirement of licence, as it did with the Btec. It was also mentioned that this is when the real money will be made with these training courses. It is no small coincidence that the unions and the ph industry are already on board with these courses and ready to take advantage of offering courses to their members. Whereas, yet again, the taxi industry is still spitting it's dummy out and refusing to play nicely with everybody else  Far be it for me to suggest that even without funding these courses will continue

There is not a bean of funding down here, it's all gone, alongside the endless stream of so-called testing experts that raised their ugly mushes when the money was there.

Strange that.

I think I have used the term leeches before, this seems like a decent time to use it again!

Jimbo's correct CC you are being hard on Leeches, the trainer we had was the owner of his own wheel clamping buisness in Salford.

So don't they have the NVQ or Btec there anymore?

Oh they have them, but it's the driver that pays for it out his own pocket.
